We live in a country where pregnancy is pretty much considered a routine physiological and socio-cultural journey .....and most people believe that one has little or no control over it, or on its outcome. But with changing times, as more and more woman are crossing the threshold and sharing the duties and responsibilities as the bread earner of the family, it becomes important to plan the most important and beautiful phase of their lives even before the pregnancy test comes as positive. So, I devote my Sunday to emphasise on the importance of preconception counselling.
What is Preconception Counselling?
Preconception Counselling is an appointment with your doctor in order to plan a safe and healthy pregnancy.
Why is Preconception Counselling important?
Preconception Counselling helps your doctor to identify factors or medical issues which may worsen or complicate your future pregnancy. The complications may be -
Miscarriage
Intrauterine Growth Restriction
Preterm Birth
Birth anomalies
Infections etc.
This is also an opportunity to find out if you may have any difficulty in trying to conceive.
What factors or medical problems need to be identified or monitored before planning a pregnancy?
Obesity.
Smoking/ Alcohol
Medical Conditions like - Anaemia
Hypertension
Diabetes
Thyroid Disorder
History of Surgery/Blood Transfusion
Family history of any medical illness
History of drug allergy
History of any medication that you are currently on.
You may need to stop or change the medicine as certain medicines have teratogenic effects on the developing foetus.
NOTE: Remember to carry a prescription of the medicine or the medicine itself to your doctor at the time of preconception counselling.
When should I schedule an appointment?
At least 3 months before you start trying to get pregnant.
What are the basic tests suggested during a preconception counselling?
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
Urine - Routine and Microscopy
Diabetes Screening
Thyroid Function Test
Tests for Rubella/Hepatitis
Pap smear
Transvaginal Sonography
Routine Medical Recommendation
Taking Folic Acid for at least 3 months before getting pregnant can prevent neural tube defects, like Spina Bifida.
